It seems that the flame that was calmed down last year has ignited again. Yes we’re talking about the Jat Protest for reservation which was at its massive phase last year but somehow the protest was settled down with talks and few promises by the Haryana government.

The Jat quota agitation which took place in February last year resulted in blocking of roads, National Highways, violence and massive damage to property at different places particularly in Sonipat, Rohtak and Jhajjar. Last year to settle the agitated Jats, the Khattar Government passed a bill to give reservation to Jats and 5 other castes, Jat Sikhs, Rors, Bishnois, Tyagis and Mula Jats as Backward class. But all the efforts of Jats were in vain as their reservation lasted only for few days due to stay by the Haryana High Court.

The Haryana High Court put the stay on the above mentioned bill because it crossed the prescribed limit of 50% on Quota. After the stay by the High Court, Jats started their protest again in the month of June and in September also; the protest continued but on minimal level.

In the meantime, a plea was also filed by one Hawa Singh Sangwan, President of Akhil Bhartiya Jat Aarakshan Sangharsh Samiti (ABJASS) in the Supreme Court.

Last time, in the month of February around 30 people were killed and 170 were injured due to the Jat agitation. Also, hundreds of crores of property and assets were destroyed during the protest and the State of Haryana was on complete lockdown for 10 days.
The Munak canal was taken over by the agitators which left Delhi without water for almost 3 days and later on the army took control of the said Canal. Section 144 was imposed on the area surrounding the Haryana and in the NCR. Even the internet services were also shut down during the protest.

Now, Jats are going with fresh protest again. This time the Haryana government is fully prepared unlike the last time when a majority of senior officials were found to be failed in their duty and to control the situation.

- In sensitive districts like Sonipat, Rohtak, Jhajjar, public gatherings are banned.

According to the sources, 50 lakhs Jats from 13 states are going to join the agitation this time and they are going to protest at Jantar Mantar on 20th March, 2017. It is also said, this time, the whole agitation is going to be monitored through drone cameras; now that’s new.

[gap height=”40px”]
This time, not only the preventive measures of Government have increased but the list of demands made by Jats has also increased.
- Jats are not only claiming the quota under OBC category in the Education and the Government Jobs, but they are also claiming to release those were Jailed during last year’s agitation.
- Apart from this, they are also demanding to withdraw the cases filed during the protest and to provide government jobs to the relatives of those who died or got injured during the last year’s agitation.
