Chennai has been receiving continuous shock waves from December 2016; the demise of the prominent AIADMK leader and the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, J. Jayalalithaa; the Vardah cyclone; Jallikattu protest and the continuing political conditions.
On February 9, 2017, the case of the Hasini, a 7-year old kid, who had been raped and killed in Chennai made the public forget the prevailing issues of Chennai. A missing case was registered in the Mangadu police station when the parents reported that the child, who was playing in the open area of the apartment was missing. Meanwhile, a partially burnt body of a girl kid was found abandoned near the by-pass road near Anakaputhur and was identified to be as Hasini. Following investigations of the CCTV camera in the apartment, it was found that Hasini was entering the house of Dashwanth, a 23-year-old mechanical engineer, living in the same apartment. During the interrogation, Dashwanth has confessed that he tried to molest the child, but when the child started raising an alarm, he had killed the child by suffocating her using a pillow. Then, using the trolley bag, he shifted the body and dispersed it by burning it.
Twitter has been trending continuously with the hashtag #SaveGirlChildren and #hasini following this incident. Several noted celebrities have raised their voices against child abuse.
